Rights of Nature PH renews pledge for the Environment, to launch campaign to rescue lakes, rivers and oceans
Manila, Philippines – The Rights of Nature have convened advocates, researchers, indigenous peoples and interest groups for a general assembly dedicated for bodies of water this November 20 and 21 at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center. Rights of Nature PH chose the theme, “To hope and act with creation” caring for lakes, rivers and oceans for this year’s gathering.
On the first day, Sr Elizabeth Carranza from the Laudato Si’ Movement Pilipinas opened the assembly with a morning ritual in solidarity for the bodies of water. Then Fr. Christian Buenafe, the executive secretary of the conference of major superiors in the Philippines provided the opening and welcome remarks. The highlight of the day is the rekindling of commitment of RoN Ph by Fr. Edwin Gariguez, the co-convener for Luzon and chairperson of PMPI.
Based on the concept note of the said general assembly, the goals are as follows: to celebrate RoN as growing and impactful movement in the Philippines, to develop a deeper understanding of RoN that would integrate interfaith, women and indigenous perspectives on nature towards an inclusive RoN Ph movement in the harmony with nature and rooted in communities, to reflect and reconnect with lakes, rivers, and oceans and explore current and upcoming ways to care for and protect these bodies of water globally, and to unite RoN advocates for upcoming initiatives.
The second day would be allotted for the presentation of the 2023 accomplishment report of RoN Ph by Mam Yolanda Esguerra of PMPI before heading for the national mapping of RoN-related activities and actions along with planning and reporting. There would be a launching of rescue lakes, rivers and oceans including Save Sierra Madre, Save Zambales, Save Manila Bay and Pasig River, and Save Verde Island Passage. The RoN Ph assembly is also going to have a Manila Bay Action with flower floats and candle lighting with prayer vigil. (Randy T. Nobleza)
