Youth told to embrace hydroponics planting

City officials urged the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) members in the city to disseminate and implement information on hydroponics planting in their respective communities to help in aggressively promoting food security and environmental preservation and protection among the residents.

Under Resolution No. 565, series of 2022, city legislators stated that to help boost the clean-up of the city, residents of each of the 128 barangays regardless of age, and through the SK members, develop within their communities a low budget yet greatly advantageous environment-friendly planting methods that would foster beautification and vegetation.

During the Senior Citizens Official for a Day (SCOFAD) regular session held on October 17, 2022, the SCOFAD Councilor Gerald M. Gammad encouraged the SK members to disseminate and implement information on hydroponics planting in their respective communities.

Hydroponics is the cultivation of plants without using soil, flowers, herbs and vegetables are planted in inert growing media and supplied with nutrient-rich solutions, oxygen, and water.

The council stipulated that this system fosters rapid growth, stronger yields and superior quality of produce. If a plant’s root system is exposed directly to water and nutrition, the plant does not have to exert any energy in sustaining itself. The energy that the roots would have expended acquiring food and water can be directed into the plant maturation. As a result, leaf growth flourishes as thus the blooming of roots and flowers.

The body claims that alarming incidents involving the youth on matters relating to dangerous substances, criminal acts and other vices should be curtailed by society through proactive movements that would encourage youth participation in social development providing alternative sources of possible revenue at a younger age.

According to the council, the limited spaces in the city hinders any form of planting activities that is why the introduction of appropriate techniques and methodology will help encourage planting despite limited spaces. – Dexter A. See
