Qualified elderly, PWDs exempted from paying garbage fees

BAGUIO CITY  –  The Senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the city are no longer required to pay garbage fees as required in securing a barangay clearance, barangay certificate, business permit, and other related services.

The ordinance recently approved by the city council grants exemption in the payment of garbage fees to any qualified senior citizen or PWD who should present their identification card before availing of the said privilege.

The collection of garbage fees from all households listed in the master list prepared by the barangay pursuant to Administrative Order No. 132 Series of 2011 and Tax Ordinance No. 2001-001 as amended by Tax Ordinance 2003-03.

The ordinance stated that the City of Baguio β€œshall continue to uphold and support mechanisms to senior citizens and PWDs.”

Republic Act No. 9994, otherwise known as the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 acknowledges the rights of the senior citizens and their essential roles in the society.

Similarly, Republic Act No. 7277 or the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons as amended by RA 0042 provides better privilege and other incentives to PWDs.

The ordinance has been forwarded to the City Mayor’s Office for signing before it takes effect. Earlier, the city council also passed an ordinance granting 2 hours of free parking to senior citizens and PWDs in all business establishments in the city. -Jordan G. Habbiling
