Children can save lives too…

More than 150 children actively participated in the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Roadshow held July 23 at the Baguio Athletic Bowl.

Despite overshooting the target attendance of 100, the Baguio City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and partners spearheading the event welcomed the young participants eager to learn the ropes of disaster management.

CDRRMO Officer-in-Charge Antonette Anaban said the activity aims to educate children on disaster management and increase their self-confidence and survival skills during emergencies and disasters.

The first 100 registrants were given their “Go Bags” containing a flashlight, whistle, and basic first aid kit.

In the sessions, the children were taught how to perform CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation and to administer first aid.

A demonstration on the use of an ambulance oriented them on the different items used in an ambulance during an emergency as facilitated by the  Baguio City Emergency Medical Services (BCEMS) and the Baguio-Benguet Public Information Civic Action Group (BB-PICAG).

The Baguio Fire Department gave the kids the opportunity to explore the fire engine and to embark on a rappelling challenge.

Other featured activities were movie shows, lectures on fire safety tips and crime prevention tips.

“These DRRM learning experiences can contribute to increasing their family’s and the  community’s resilience to disaster.  We hope that the knowledge stays with them as we pray that no calamities will strike that will give them the opportunity to use it,” the CDRRMO said.

The DRRM Roadshow was conducted by the CDRRMO in partnership with the CDRRM Council members namely the Bureau of Fire Protection-Baguio City, Health Services Office-BCEMS, Baguio City Police Office,  (BB-PICAG) and KABALIKAT CIVICOM group.

The activity was part of the July 2022 National Disaster Resilience Month celebration. – CDRRMO/PIO Baguio
