Funding for the National Higher Education Day Celebration proposed

BAGUIO CITY – (June 2, 2021) – Councilor Vladimir Cayabas has proposed an ordinance appropriating P150,000.00 for the commemoration of May 18 of every year as National Higher Education Day in the city.

The proposed amount shall be used for programs and activities in recognition of the significant roles of the academe in the development of the city. The yearly commemoration program shall include the recognition of teachers with sterling performances, student achievers, and exemplary graduates.

Under the ordinance, a committee consisting of the City Mayor’s Office, the Sangguniang Panlungsod, the City Budget Office, Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the Association of Higher Education Institutions in the city shall be formed to spearhead the activities during the yearly commemoration program.

The ordinance is in support of Republic Act No. 11522 which was signed into law declaring May 18 of every year as National Higher Education Day to commemorate the founding anniversary of the CHED.

Cayabas said the essential contributions of the academe to the advancement of the city are worth acknowledging, adding that expressing the city’s gratitude towards the education sector is apt or timely.

The proposed ordinance has been approved on first reading and referred to the Sanggunian’s Committee on Appropriations and Finance for review. –Jordan G. Habbiling
