City eyes widening of central school sidewalk

Mayor Benjamin Magalong directed the City Engineering Office to address the case of the problematic sidewalk along Yandoc St. fronting Baguio Central School and Josefa Cariรฑo Elementary School.
Aside from being narrow, the sidewalk is obstructed by a number of utility posts so that crowding is observed especially during the students’ dismissal time.
A team from the CEO traffic and transportation management division headed by Engr. Januario Borillo and the maintenance division under chief Engr. Richard Lardizabal inspected the site to assess and recommend solutions.
Sidewalk expansion was considered as the best solution to give pedestrians more room in the area.
Initially, Borillo said “road diet” or lane reduction may have to be done to widen the sidewalk.
Lardizabal said they are also looking into the possibility of widening the sidewalk by reclaiming the road right-of-way being occupied by the schools.
He said they are now verifying the actual boundary of the schools to work it out.
He also said that coordination has been made for the relocation of the utility posts that impede human traffic along the sidewalk. – Aileen P. Refuerzo
