BGHMC performs first cochlear implant in the Cordillera

The Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center – Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery has successfully performed its first Cochlear Implant in the Cordillera, June 10, 2022 at BGHMC.

The patient is a one-year-and-six-month-old baby who had profound hearing loss, which means that two of his ears were with impaired.

Dr. Jefferson Peckley of BGHMC and his team, who led the surgery, explained that a cochlear implant is used to install an electronic device that can help provide a sense of sound to a child’s ear who is suffering from hearing loss.

The electronic device installed in the patient’s ear will be switched on or activated after three weeks, which will be the first day of ear hearing, and will be followed by a speech therapy. – Ariel U. Biala/PIO Baguio
