#SemanaSanta2026: Faith in Action for Humanity and the Earth in Times of Crisis

As we begin the solemn observance of Holy Week, we do so in a world weighed down by rising energy costs, conflict, and uncertainty. In these challenging times, BAN Toxics calls on all Filipino faithful to choose actions that safeguard both human health and the environment—simple yet meaningful acts of care that matter now more than ever.

This sacred season also ushers in the onset of summer, bringing intense heat, a clear reminder that the climate crisis is affecting our lives and communities.

During last year’s dry season, the Philippines recorded heat index levels as high as 52°C—conditions that put lives and livelihoods at serious risk. PAGASA warns that April and May will bring even more intense heat this year.

As temperatures rise, so do the energy demands. Rising energy costs and supply constraints, driven by global conflicts, are already affecting the country through increased fuel prices, higher electricity rates, and growing pressure on household budgets—especially for the most vulnerable. These challenges also strain essential services such as water distribution and cooling systems during periods of extreme heat.

At the same time, the impact on water resources is becoming harder to ignore. Water scarcity is becoming more evident, especially during the dry season and El Niño periods. The World Resources Institute (WRI) projects that the Philippines could face severe water shortages by 2040 due to population growth and climate change.

Together, these overlapping crises highlight the urgent need for collective action and more sustainable, mindful use of our resources.

Guided by its mission to advance environmental justice and a toxics-free future, BAN Toxics echoes the spirit of Lent: a season of thoughtful reflection and compassionate action. When resources are limited and communities are most vulnerable, protecting our environment becomes an act of solidarity.

Holy Week invites us to renew not only our faith, but also our way of living. Conserving water, using energy wisely, reducing waste, and avoiding harmful products are no longer just personal choices—they are necessary responses to the realities we face today.

Practical Ways to Observe a Zero-Waste and Toxics-Free Holy Week

For Parishes and Religious Communities:

• Use locally sourced, organic palm fronds and flowers to reduce environmental impact
• Avoid plastic and PVC-based decorations that contribute to pollution and toxic exposure
• Choose natural, non-toxic candles (lead-free, fragrance-free)
• Promote energy conservation in churches and during events
• Encourage carpooling or shared transport for Visita Iglesia to reduce fuel use
• Practice strict waste segregation during all activities
• Use reusable or compostable materials for community meals
• Organize clean-up drives in churches and pilgrimage areas
• Support local, sustainable producers for Holy Week needs

For Families and Individuals:

• Bring reusable tumblers, cutlery, and eco-bags during processions and church visits
• Prepare simple, locally sourced meals with minimal packaging
• Avoid single-use plastics and unnecessary consumption
• Embrace fasting not just from food, but from wastefulness and excess
• Conserve energy and water at home
• Use natural, non-toxic cleaning products when preparing your home

For Travelers and Pilgrims:

• Be mindful of your environmental impact when visiting sacred and natural sites
• Carry your waste and dispose of it properly
• Support small, local, and sustainable businesses
• Share transportation or opt for low-impact travel options (public transport, biking, walking)
• Limit unnecessary travel to reduce fuel consumption
• Plan trips efficiently to minimize energy use and emissions

• Practice mindful water use in public restrooms (e.g., turn off taps properly)

BAN Toxics stands firm in protecting Filipinos from harmful chemicals and promoting sustainable communities. Amid global instability and environmental challenges, let our faith inspire action, choosing what is just, sustainable, and life-giving for humanity and the earth. #
