Slow hike in awareness of no-scalpel vasectomy noted

A local health expert noted that there has been a slow increase in the awareness of the public on the availability of free no-scalpel vasectomy as a family planning method in the city since the city government started embracing them over the past ten years.

Dr. Nelson Hora, a medical officer of the City Health Services Office, said that there are already four to five clients undergoing the minor procedure at the City Camp District Health Center per month compared to the no-client in a month which the center had encountered over the past several years following the adoption of no-scalpel vasectomy among the males as one of the accepted family planning methods.

He added that males who want to undergo this procedure undergo pre-procedure counselling to establish the valid reasons why they want to do so to ensure that they fully understand the advantages of undergoing the no-scalpel vasectomy.

The city health official claimed that the procedure is safe and there is nothing to fear about its side effects when being subjected to the procedure.

According to him, there is also an increasing awareness among married males on vasectomy as an option for family planning after witnessing the difficulties of their partners in the raising of their children.

A no-scalpel vasectomy is a minimally invasive procedure for male sterilization that uses special instruments to make a small puncture in the scrotum, avoiding the need for a scalpel. The technique accesses and seals the vas deferens, the tube that carries the sperm, leading to benefits such as reduced bleeding, pain and complications compared to conventional vasectomy. The recovery is generally faster, often with minimal or no stitches needed.

Hora explained that the effect of the no-scalpel vasectomy will be realized by those who have undergone the procedure within three months that is why those who were subjected to the same will still have to practice other family planning methods with their partners and be subjected to sperm analysis during the period to ascertain its effectivity.

Hora claimed that the awareness of the public on the availability of free no-scalpel vasectomy remains slow but he expressed confidence that it will continue to increase because of the frequency of inquiries that health experts have been getting among males who already want to undergo this procedure as part of their contribution to family planning.

He advised males wanting to undergo no-scalpel vasectomy to visit the City Camp District Health Center for them to undergo counselling to ascertain their readiness for the procedure anytime they want to do so. – Dexter A. See
