Release of athletes incentives to be fast tracked

City officials recently requested the Sports and Recreation Division under the City Administrator’s Office to fast track the submission of the requirements in the processing of sports incentives to the Baguio City athletes and coaches who participated in the Philippine National Games (PNG) and Batang Pinoy 2023.

Under Resolution No. 072, series of 2024, local legislators stated that the City Council through Resolution No. 046, series of 2024 commended and congratulated the Baguio City athletes and their coaches for emerging victorious in the PNG and Batang Pinoy 2023 held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex on December 17-22, 2023 and for the processing of their sports incentives provided for under Ordinance No. 47, series of 2021 governing the new sports incentive policy of the city government as amended by Ordinance No. 25, series of 2022.

Earlier, considered by the local legislative body were the matters, issues and suggestions raised by some members and resource persons during the February 5, 2024 regular session relative to the PNG and Batang Pinoy 2023 awards and incentives to the deserving athletes who represented the city in the said prestigious competitions.

The Philippine Youth Games or simply Batang Pinoy is an initiative of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) instrumental in scouting and developing young athletes since its inception in 1999.

Aimed at children aged 15 years and under, the event stands as a testament to the country’s dedication to nurturing a future generation of sports champions.

On the other hand, the PNG is a multi-sporting event organized by the PSC aimed to find the possible composition of the national team that will represent the country in international sports such as the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Games and the Olympic Games.

In the recently concluded Batang Pinoy 2023, the final tally saw Baguio City not only lead in gold but also amassed a considerable count in silver and bronze medals, bringing the total medal haul of city athletes to 193 medals.

The body stipulated that the said achievement highlighted the city’s robust sports development programs and the high-altitude training environment that gives its athletes a competitive edge.

Moreover, the city’s team to the PNG 2023 held simultaneously with the Batang Pinoy Games and at the same venues placed third with a total of 123 hard earned medals.

Copies of the approved resolution will be transmitted to the concerned offices for their information, guidance, ready reference and further needed action. – Dexter A. See
