Baguio aquatic athletes, coached commended

City officials recently congratulated and commended the Baguio City athletes and their coaches who emerged victorious in the Asian Open Schools Invitational Aquatics Championships 2024 held at the Assumption University, Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok, Thailand on February 2-4, 2024.

In a resolution, local legislators stated that it is with great pride and joy that the local government and the people confer the appropriate commendation to the Baguio City athletes and their coaches Walter B. Oppod, Russel O. Carno, Joeward P. Abance, Chris Sobrevilla and Xyrielle  John S. Tagara, assistant coach, for emerging victorious in the recently concluded Asian Schools Invitational Aquatics Championships 2024.

Earlier, the Philippine Sports Commission, together with Central North Luzon Cordillera Swimming Coaches Association and the Assumption University, Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok, Thailand, hosted the Asian Schools Invitational Aquatics Championships 2024 last February 2-4, 2024 where the Baguio City athletes successfully clinched medals in their respective events which is a manifestation that the city is a land of champions.

The Baguio athletes who emerged victorious during the said competition are Jacob Damien A. Jimenez – gold medalist in the 50-meter butterfly kick boys, bronze medalist in the 50-meter freestyle kick boys, bronze medalist in the 100-meter freestyle boys and bronze medalist in the 50-meter butterfly boys and Jhaezen Graig S. Gumbawan – bronze medalist in the 50-meter freestyle kick boys.

Under Section 1 of Republic Act (RA) 9850, it is the policy of the State to inculcate patriotism, nationalism and appreciation of the role of national heroes and symbols in the historical development of the country

Further, the State must give priority to education, science and technology, arts and culture, and sports to foster patriotism and nationalism, accelerate social progress and promote total human liberation and development.

Under Ordinance No. 47, series of 2021 or the Baguio City Comprehensive Sorts Code, it promotes the city as a sports center in Northern Luzon.
