Moryonan 2026, Pagkamulat offers a chance to pause and reflect

Boac, Marinduque – The calendar of activities from the island is out, featuring the vibrant culture and rich history with historical landmarks and an immersive experience of Marinduque’s unique blend of heritage and modern charm.

Based on the respective Tourism Office of Marinduque, the schedule may change. Over the weekend, Boac had its general orientation for Moryons in the Immaculate Conception Cathedral last March 21 (Saturday). By Monday (March 23), the soft opening of Marinduque Expo Agro-Tourism Trade and Food Fair 2026 is going to take place meanwhile there is also the start of registration of Moryons in Torrijos at their office. In addition, through the week prior to Semana Santa, there is a programming for busking and kalutang night, culinary heritage night, laro ng lahi and the like at the Marinduque Expo.

On March 28 (Saturday), a Moryonan Heritage Symposium will gather local historians and researchers on the time-old tradition during Holy Week, Msgr. Rolando Oliverio, Mayor Senen Livelo Jr, James Liwanagan, and Luigi Malangis would be sharing their perspectives about moryonan. This is going to be followed by the busking night at the Marinduque Expo by the Marinduque State University. On the same day, Buenavista would be having a jigging tournament at Baywalk Buenavista, and Santa Cruz would be opening their Lenten Bazaar and Morion quarters tent design contest.

The holy week 2026 starts with a holy Mass, hosanahan, blessing of palms, and Palm Sunday procession, and general station of the Cross. In addition, there would be the first-ever Salvation Run 2026 at the Moriones Arena, exhibitors’ night at Marinduque Expo. Meanwhile, the opening of the agro and food bazaar at Gasan Sea view park and the start of the Via de Moriones Cultural heritage booth exhibit at Santa Cruz.

Holy Monday would be the start of observing the wearing of caftan attire for all government employees during the Holy Mass at Moriones Arena, community Lenten parade led by the Provincial Government of Marinduque. Then, the start of Moryon registration at Moriones Museum in Boac. Then the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of Marinduque Agro-Tourism, Trade and Food Fair 2026. In addition, the Boac Municipal Scholars would have their tour guiding in the heritage district of Marinduque’s capital. Then the Morion Parade by various groups such as MISTAH, KMMK, Legion, and Lancea. There is also an ESTI night at the Marinduque expo and MISTAH Torch Parade on Monday (March 30).

To continue the activities on Holy Monday, there is also the Gasan Lenten Parade and Parada ng mag Moryon and display of Higanteng Moryon in Gasan, then a parade of moryons and municipal officials with employees, pagpapatala ng mga moryon at Mogpog covered court, Mogpog Trade Fair Ribbon cutting ceremony and the mounting of the performance, “Ang Unang Moryon” at the municipal park. Then at Santa Cruz, there is chanting of the incipit lamentation at the town plaza. And in Torrijos, installation and renewal of Moryons with community Lenten parade.

By Holy Tuesday (March 31) Bisikleta Iglesia, Padyak Penitensya co-organized by the Immaculate Conception Parish and Provincial Government of Marinduque at seven of 14 Parishes of the Diocese of Boac. The pilgrimage route begins at the Immaculate Conception Parish and proceed to Mary Help fo Christian Parish, to Monastery of St. Clare, San Isidro Labrador Parish, then Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, to St Raphael Archangel Parish and finally St. Joseph Spouse of Mary Parish. Just before the senakulo, in Mogpog there is Aresto de Cristo at the municipal park.

On Holy Wednesday, April 1 there is the annual Maskara mo, Kulayan Mo: Moryonan mask painting activity at the Moriones museum, Grand Tubungan sa Moryon arena provided by the Local Government of Boac. Then the highlight of the day is Holy mass, Holy Wednesday Procession followed by the Unang Dula – Ang Lumang Tipan at the Moriones Arena. By Maundy Thursday (April 2) the next installment is Ikalawang Dula – Ang Bagong Tipan.

By Good Friday, there are the seven last words in all parishes and the Grand religious procession. Then on Black Saturday, easter vigil mass in all parishes as well. The last day is Easter Sunday, which would be a blast. By April 5, there is the grand finales of Talento Marinduqueño at Marinduque Expo, Gasang-gasang Easter Sunday Streetdancing festival at Guingona Park, and Rise Marinduque: Battle of the Bands and Alive Ngani: Marinduque Music Festival 2026. But the highlight to close the week is the Pagpupugot kay Longhino and paglilibing kay Longhino at the Mogpog Covered court, where the original practice of Moryonan started through Padre Dionisio Santiago. # Randy T.
