Marinduque Island pushes for an Integrated Research Agenda

Boac, Marinduque – The lone university in the heart of the Philippines, Marinduque State University, crafted an integrated research agenda for the island. MarSU came up with a roadmap for health, food, and nutrition; sustainability, resilience & environmental justice; creative industries & tourism; digitization & innovation; and quality education & lifelong learning. This was the outcome for the In-Service training (INSET) for associate professors, full professors, and university professors last August 5 and 6 at Casa Real.

With the theme, “Empowering MarSU: Advancing Interdisciplinary Research and Public Service Excellence” was organized with the initiative from its Research Unit, conceptualized and in collaboration with the Human Resource Management Unit of the University as part of INSET this semester. This activity would not come into full fruition without the utmost support of the MarSU President and the whole of its administration.

During the first day, the MarSU vice president for research and extension. Dr. Ma. Edelwina Blase delivered the welcome remarks. In behalf of the Boac municipal mayor, Armi DC Carreon. administrator Carlo Jacinto imparted the message of support. The MarSU vice president for academic affairs, Dr. Leodegario Jalos Jr., shared inspirational message how important research is for a university is? Meanwhile, Dr. Evangeline Mandia, the research director and dean of the College of Environmental Studies, passionately underscored the rationale of the INSET. The university chief administrative officer, Mam Erma Reyes acknowledged the guests, stakeholders, and participants.

The MarSU President, Dr. Diosdado Zulueta, articulated the driving force behind the island of Marinduque, his message of oneness and unity transcended. He professed the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research with his signature greeting of love and sincerity. On the same day, Asst Prof Ron Jay Dangcalan from the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Human Ecology revisited the existing MarSU research agenda. During the afternoon, Asst. Prof. Maricel Elorde from the Palawan State University Graduate School provided a deeper dive into Sustainable Development Goals.

On the second day, Dr. Klein Fernandez of the UPLB College of Human Ecology has provided the tools for publishing, writing scientific articles, and finding the right journal. Moreover, the last topic was about the indigenous knowledge and practices co-produced by UPLB and PSU to inspire the island university in pursuing knowledge production as a human response. The INSET organized is the third of the series intended for college lecturers and instructors last along with assistant professors last July 22-24. The proposed agenda for the island is expected to be approved in the research council meeting and endorsed by the academic council for the regents’ final approval. # Ronald T. Nobleza Ph. D.
