Tubungan and Kundiman Competition held to keep Island Traditions alive

Mogpog, Marinduque – The Local Government Unit of Mogpog, through its Tourism and Cultural Office, conducted a competition for Putong practice and Kundiman music last December 30. At least 17 participants joined the Kundiman contest, and the Tubungan competition yielded five high school and three elementary groups with well-coveted cash prizes.

According to the Mogpog Municipal Tourism and Cultural Office, “The competition will feature enthusiastic participants from various elementary and secondary schools of Mogpog, highlighting the creativity, discipline, and cultural pride of young performers. Through this event, students are allowed to express their artistry while preserving and promoting the traditional music and performing arts deeply rooted in local culture.”

The High School Division competed at 1:00 PM, followed by the Elementary Division by 6:00 PM, allowing both age groups to shine in their respective categories. The competition promised an engaging and inspiring display of talent, teamwork, and dedication to cultural excellence. LGU Mogpog emphasized, “The Tubungan Competition serves not only as a contest but as a celebration of heritage, encouraging the youth to value tradition while nurturing their skills and confidence on stage. The community is invited to witness and support the young artists as they bring music, culture, and pride to life.”

In addition to the Tubungan contest, the Municipality proudly presented Himig Mogpog: Season 1, a Kundiman Competition held last December 30, 2025, at 6:00 PM, celebrating the timeless beauty of Filipino music and the depth of emotion expressed through the kundiman.

Based on its official social media page, “this cultural event aims to preserve and promote the kundiman as a treasured musical heritage, reflecting themes of love, patriotism, and Filipino identity. Through heartfelt performances, participants will showcase their vocal artistry while honoring the traditions that have shaped our nation’s musical history.”



Moreover, the Competing participants are required to wear Filipiniana or Barong attire, symbolizing elegance, respect for tradition, and pride in Filipino culture. The visual and musical harmony of the event is expected to create a meaningful and memorable experience for performers and audiences alike.

Himig Mogpog: Season 1 served as a platform for local talents to shine, foster cultural appreciation, and strengthen community pride.
