Mayor: Penalize PUV terminals violating smoke-free ordinance

Mayor Benjamin Magalong issued a stern warning against public utility vehicle (PUV) terminals violating Ordinance No. 34-2017 or the Smoke-Free Baguio Ordinance.
During the meeting of the Smoke-Free Baguio Task Force which he heads, the mayor expressed dismay over the state of jeepney terminals and taxi convergence points he inspected recently.
He said the places reeked of cigarette smoke and were teeming with cigarette butts he himself picked up.
“We strive to make our city free from the ill effects of smoking and vaping. Our PUV terminals are points of public convergence. PUV associations should also respect and obey our laws for the benefit of the riding public,” the mayor said.
Ordinance No. 34 -2017 prohibits the use, sale, distribution and advertisement of cigarettes and other tobacco products including vape products in public utility vehicles, government-owned vehicles (mobile and stationary), accommodation and entertainment establishments, public buildings, public places, enclosed public places or any enclosed areas outside one’s private residence or private place of work except in duly designated smoking areas duly approved and fully compliant with the requirements.
Violators are liable to fines and potential imprisonment. Fines for individual violators range from P1,000 to P3,000 while fines for establishments are from P2,000 to P5,000 with the possibility of suspension or revocation of their business permit. – Aileen P. Refuerzo
