Love in Action Through Responsible Waste Segregation

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines, 13th October 2026 – A plastic bottle tossed into the wrong bin, an old gadget left unused at home, or recyclable containers mixed with other waste. These may seem like ordinary things, but how we handle our waste can make a difference in what can still be recovered and how we care for the environment we share.

At SM City Baguio, shoppers can take part in more responsible waste management through facilities that make proper disposal and recycling more accessible. From designated trash bins to an electronic waste collection point and the SM Green Recycling Machine, the mall encourages everyone to be more mindful of what they throw away and where it goes.

One of the simplest ways to start is by using the proper trash bins. Segregating waste helps keep recyclable materials separate from residual waste, making it easier to identify items that can still be recovered instead of being discarded with everything else.

For Danielle, a student at the University of the Cordilleras, these everyday choices matter.

“Ang mga simpleng action natin ay big impact ito sa waste management natin,” she shared.

The same mindful approach applies to electronic waste, or e-waste. Old or unwanted electronic devices should not automatically go into regular trash bins, as some contain chemical components and broken parts that may pose safety risks when improperly handled. SM City Baguio has a designated e-waste collection point near Cyber Zone, providing a place where electronic waste can be brought for proper collection.

For Richard, 40, a sales technician in the IT field, proper segregation and disposal of damaged gadgets are important for both environmental protection and people’s safety.

“Mahalaga ang segregation at waste management ng mga sirang gadgets kasi meron itong mga chemical component. Pag hindi proper ang waste management nito, puwede itong cause ng sunog at puwedeng masugatan ang mga tao dahil may mga basag na LCD. Kaya nararapat lang ang proper disposal,” he shared.

Richard also expressed appreciation for the e-waste collection facility at SM City Baguio, which has made disposal more convenient for those handling damaged electronic devices.

“Thankful sa SM City Baguio kasi since meron na dito, mas safe ang pagtatapon. Noong wala pa, kailangan naming i-pull out pabalik ng Manila yung mga ito,” he added.

For recyclable beverage containers, shoppers can also use the SM Green Recycling Machine. By accepting eligible used containers, the machine gives visitors another way to take part in recycling while going about their usual mall visits.

Lilibeth, an intern, encouraged everyone to begin with their own habits and take responsibility for the waste they generate.

“Maging responsible po tayo sa segregation ng mga basura natin, start the change sa mga sarili natin,” she said.

Being mindful of waste does not have to start with a major lifestyle change. It can begin with checking the label on a bin before throwing something away, setting aside an old electronic device for proper collection, or choosing to recycle a used beverage container instead of treating it as ordinary trash.

These small decisions become more meaningful when practiced by more people. At SM City Baguio, shoppers, tenants, employees, and visitors all have a part to play in keeping shared spaces clean and making better use of materials that might otherwise go to waste.

The next time you visit the mall, take a second look at what you are about to throw away. Choosing the right bin, bringing e-waste to the proper collection point, or recycling eligible beverage containers through the SM Green Recycling Machine are simple ways to show care for the community and the environment we share. After all, being a most loved mall also means encouraging everyday actions that help make Baguio a cleaner, more sustainable place for everyone.
