HIV, TB advocacy held via badminton tourney

BAGUIO CITY — The Department of Health–Center for Health Development–Cordillera Administrative Region (DOH-CHD-CAR) hosted the 2nd DOH-YMCA STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) NAMNAMA Badminton Tournament, June 14-15, at the YMCA Baguio Multipurpose Gym.
The two-day event was held in partnership with the Baguio City DOH Office, Baguio City Health Services Office (HSO), YMCA Baguio and its Badminton Club.
A June 18, 2025 article posted at the Baguio City HSO website revealed that over 210 participants joined the activity with the theme: “NAMNAMA: Champions Know Their Status – Get Tested, Stay in the Game”, aimed to promote HIV awareness, reduce stigma, and provide accessible HIV testing through sports.
In their messages, YMCA Baguio General Secretary Rev. Robert Sison, and HSO head Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes, emphasized the power of public-private partnerships and youth engagement in the HIV response.
Lectures were also conducted on HIV and STIs, including PrEP education, DOH-CHD-CAR HPO II Christine Andradeand and HSO Nurse II Gayhope Alangsab which laid the groundwork for informed choices, prevention strategies, and open dialogue around sexual health.
Simultaneously, a badminton tournament was held in three categories—men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles—that showcased healthy competition while encouraging players and supporters to participate in on-site HIV and TB (Tuberculosis) screening services.
The tournament resulted in 115 individuals screened for HIV and 111 for TB, an increase from that tallied in 2024.
Meanwhile, a team challenge incentivized referrals, with the Red Team claiming victory by referring 52 individuals, helping boost this year’s overall turnout to nearly triple that of last year.
The event culminated with an awarding ceremony which reinforced the event’s message that health and excellence go hand-in-hand. – Gaby B. Keith with reports from DOH
