BAGUO CITY — Newly registered employers and bookkeepers were equipped with essential knowledge on SSS responsibilities during the fifth Employer and Bookkeeper’s Day of the year, held on May 28 at the SSS Baguio Branch—the monthly orientation featured five focused segments aimed at enhancing compliance and understanding of social security programs. Jovita Gonzalez, Social Security Officer III, opened the session with a detailed explanation of SSS Membership. As an actively paying member, whether as a private sector worker or individually paying member such as self-employed, voluntary, OFW, or non-working spouse, you and your beneficiaries are assured of prompt, convenient, and meaningful social protection both today and in the future.
The SSS commits to providing adequate benefits, especially in times of contingencies such as sickness, maternity, disability, old age, death, and even unemployment. There are two types of coverage under the regular SSS program: Compulsory (for employed, self-employed, OFWs) and Voluntary (for separated members or those electing to continue contributions).
Atty. Duchess Veneru Anselmo, Legal Officer, followed a crucial discussion on the legal obligations of employers, which include the issuance of official receipts, maintaining accurate records of employment, and ensuring deductions are remitted. Failure to do so may lead to legal actions and penalties, including a 12-year ‘ imprisonment. So, it should not be taken lightly.
Dr. Marie Anne Rasco, SSS Branch Medical Specialist, focused on the Employees’ Compensation Program (ECP) as well as maternity and disability benefits. She clarified that “errand rules”, or duties done outside the office but still part of an employee’s function, may be compensable under ECP.
During an interview, when asked “How is this seminar beneficial to you?”, one representative from the Baguio Market Vendors Multipurpose Cooperative (Bamarvempco) answered, “Being updated, especially on the transition of transactions and updates via online platforms, is helpful not only for employers but also for employees.”
Jhona D. Legaspi, Social Security Officer III, provided a comprehensive explanation of SSS Retirement, Death, and Funeral (RDF) benefits, as well as the Loan Programs, emphasizing the ease of online filing.
Through this monthly event, the SSS reinforces its message of accountability and protection: “Once a member, always a member.” The session concluded with a reminder that employers must diligently uphold their responsibilities for the benefit of their employees and full compliance with the law. ###
