City commends essential services of women

BAGUIO CITY – (18 March 2021) – City officials recognized women’s role in the city and commending their essential services, stellar endeavors and impactful contributions to the community a whole.

Under Resolution No. 120, series of 2021, signed by Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong, local legislators stated it is but fitting to acknowledge and recognize the significant role of women in the city and that the situation in the city will never be the same without their great contributions, be it in their capacity as mothers, frontliners, volunteers, professionals, active participants, entrepreneurs, managers, leaders, preachers, educators, trailblazers, culture bearers, public officials, among others.

Further, the council said that women are key contributors to the economy, thus, continuous employment of women has been a critical factor in abating or even eradicating poverty in the city.

The body stipulated that the extraordinary role of women in the government’s economic recovery initiatives amidst the pandemic is highly essential that needs to be reciprocated and given high merit and recognition.

The State recognizes the role of women in nation building and shall ensure the fundamental equality before the law of women and men.

Moreover, the State also values the dignity of every person and guarantees for respect for human rights.

The council claimed that the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) vividly specify gender equality and women’s empowerment which reaffirms the equal rights and opportunities of women for a sustainable and progressive society and further stresses the importance of the full and equal participation of women in decision-making and of gender mainstreaming in all aspects of social development.

According to the body, the Philippines, being the first Asian country to elect a woman president, has maintained its place among the top ten countries in the world in terms of gender equality and that one landmark legislation is Republic Act (RA) 9710, or the Magna Carta for Women, a comprehensive women’s human rights law which seeks to further achieve women empowerment in the country. The said law further seeks to eliminate discrimination through the recognition, protection, fulfillment and promotion of the rights to the Filipino women, especially to those belonging to the marginalized sectors of the society.

Proclamation No. 227, series of 1988 designated March as women’s role in history month and followed by Republic Act (RA) 6949 that declared March 8 of every year as a working special holiday to be known as the National Women’s Day.

This year’s National Women’s Month celebration theme is ‘Juana Laban sa Pandemya: Kaya!’ while the theme for the International Women’s Day 2021 centers on ‘Women Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID-19 World.’ Both themes connote resilience and highlight how women can be equal partners in decision-making processes, especially on policy-making. – Dexter
