Baguio Solon Re-Elected as House Higher and Technical Education Chair

The House of Representatives has begun its election of chairmen, vice-chairmen, and members for the various committees in the 19th Congress.  Among those elected was Baguio City Representative Mark Go, who was re-elected as the Chairman of the Committee on Higher and Technical Education (CHTE) for the lower chamber of Congress. 

The CHTE is mandated to deal with all measures and matters directly and principally relating to post-secondary and tertiary education, technical education, distance education, students’ and teachers’ welfare, and centers of excellence. The Chair, as representative of the House, also sits as a member of the Board of Regents and Board of Trustees of the 114 state universities and colleges (SUCs).

“I am overwhelmed by the support and trust given by the House leadership and my colleagues as they have entrusted me once again to lead the Committee on Higher and Technical Education in the 19th Congress. We will not only continue what we have started but will also double our efforts towards ensuring quality and accessible education for all our Filipino learners”, Rep. Go said in response to the recent re-election.

In the 18th Congress, 580 measures were referred to the Committee, with 531 measures that were acted upon. The Committee also reported 3 national measures and 33 local measures that were enacted into law that includes the creation of several state colleges and the conversion of several state colleges into state universities. Among the measures enacted into law were RA 11509 known as the Medical Scholarship and Return Service Program or the “Doktor para sa Bayan Act”, RA 11522 or the National Higher Education Day, and RA 11551 integrating Labor Education into the Tertiary Education.

Joint with the Committee on Basic Education and Culture, significant measures that were also enacted include RA 11713, or the Excellence in Teacher Education Act, and RA 11899 otherwise known as the Second Congressional Commission on Education Act.

“We will continue to legislate relevant and meaningful laws that will further uplift the quality of our higher and technical education”, Rep. Go finally said. ###
