Baguio opens 51st Nutrition Month with community spirit

Despite overcast skies and drizzling rain, the spirit of wellness and community stood resilient as the Summer Capital officially opened its 51st Nutrition Month Celebration on July 9, 2025 at the Baguio Athletic Bowl.
Led by the City Government thru the Health Services Office (HSO) and members of the Baguio City Nutrition Committee, the launch gathered attendees from various barangays, local offices, schools, and city officials in an energetic show of support.
With this year’s focus on food and nutrition security, the celebration emphasized that access to proper nutrition is not a privilege but a human right, one that should be available and accessible to everyone. Mayor Benjamin Magalong pointed out the importance of collective responsibility in building a healthier community.
“Health is a priority; wellness is a shared responsibility and a healthier Baguio starts with every step we take, literally and figuratively,” he said.
One of the program highlights was the “Hataw” dance exercise, which saw enthusiastic participation from the crowd and not only set the tone for the event but also encouraged physical fitness as part of a holistic health lifestyle.
The event also served as a platform to promote the month-long activities aimed at strengthening nutrition advocacy in every barangay.
“The launch of the Nutrition Program is a vital initiative dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of our community. It’s not just a formal event, it’s a call to action,” HSO deputy head Maria Lourdes Pakoy said.
Barangay health officers and residents welcomed the celebration’s practical and community-based approach.
“Kung ano man ang mga ginawa namin dito eh we share din sa barangay council meeting namin,” a health worker from Upper QM said, citing their plan to integrate ideas such as seed distribution for vegetable gardens.
Another attendee from Barangay Imelda Marcos highlighted the program’s relevance, noting: “This program is to advocate the activity as supplementary,” referring to how these events help reinforce efforts in addressing local health and nutrition concerns.
The annual celebration stands as a reminder and reinforcement that wellness starts in homes, grows in communities, and thrives when everyone takes part.
