Baguio City is second runner-up in 2025 Model Cities awards
Baguio City secured a strong finish as second runner-up in the 2025 Manila Times Model Cities and Municipalities Awards, reaffirming its standing as a premier hub for sustainability, good governance, livelihood and environment and people-focused development.
The city copped the top awards in the eco-friendly and livelihood and employment-centered categories and was first runner-up in the business-friendly category.
“Thank you to all our residents, partners, and sectors whose hard work, unity, and innovation make Baguio City shine. This recognition belongs to all of us, and we will continue striving for a greener, stronger, and more inclusive future. Maraming salamat po,” Mayor Benjamin Magalong said as he received the award in ceremonies held at the Manila Hotel last November 14, 2025.
The mayor also served as resource speaker during the annual awards program which this year carried the theme, “Environmental Communities Cultivating the First World Economy.”
He said that this year’s achievement and last year’s victory as top model city winner proved that the city remains a benchmark for sustainable urban management and good governance.
“We have made great strides, but only by embracing the voices of our people and ensuring that our strategies are based on evidence and comprehensive studies can we continue to overcome challenges like urban decay. Good governance goes beyond fighting corruption; it is about empowerment, patience and authentic leadership,” the mayor was quoted as saying.
The awards program honored outstanding local government units (LGUs) that champion community development under 15 categories, including sustainability, innovation, education and eco-friendliness.Calamba, Biñan, Cabuyao and Balanga cities joined Baguio in the roster of top city winners in multiple categories. – Aileen P.
