3rd Saleng Festivals environmental-themed choir contest to push through on June 6

3rd Saleng Festivals environmental-themed choir contest to push through on June 6

The choir competition dubbed “Rhythm and Harmony of Nature,” with eight secondary school contenders goes on at 2PM, June 6 at the Baguio Cultural and Convention Center.

The announcement came from City Environment and Parks and Management Office (CEPMO) head Atty. Rhenan Diwas, after the contest’s postponement last Wednesday due to Typhoon Betty’s heavy rains and gusty winds.

The contest is part of the 3rd Saleng Festival activities wherein Baguio public and private schools; Baguio City National High School (BCNHS), Berkeley School, Easter College, Philippine Science High School – Cordillera Campus, Pines City National High School and Rizal National High School (RNHS) join.

Land-locked Immaculate Conception School of Bokod and Madaymen National High School, Kibungan, travel to Baguio for the contest.

Fifty Thousand Pesos (P50,000) goes to the champion voices, Thirty Thousand for second prize and Twenty Thousand Pesos for Third Prize. Consolation prizes await the participating choral groups.

The contest is of two parts: an original environment-themed composition which may be in English, Filipino, or any Cordillera language, or a combination of all; and Chaz Katalbas “Kalikasan” song. The winning original composition could be designated as the official musical theme for the succeeding Saleng festivals, Atty. Diwas said.

Live accompaniment is allowed for the contest, which may be an indigenous instrument of choice.

The judges for the competition are virtuoso John Glenn Gaerlan, Jomard Calamba and Normita Pablico; all in the field of music.

Before the choir contest, the third Saleng festival calendar of activities shall be unfurled for the four-month celebration.

The Saleng (Pine tree) festival was institutionalized with Mayor Benjamin Magalong formally signing the ordinance in Jan. 2022; for public and private partnership for environmental preservation and protection.

Celebratory activities include regreening and seedling distribution, regional environmental beauty contest, green exposition, adventure activities, tree cart parade, recognition and exhibits, international day for diversity, world environment day, free emission testing, battle of the bands, green runway and cycling. – JGFianza
