PNPA Retirees Group Urges Fair, Professional Probe in BFP Chief Corruption Allegations

The PNPA Lakan Retirees Association, Inc. (PLRAI) has called on Interior Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla to ensure that the investigation into corruption allegations involving Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Chief Jesus Piedad Fernandez is conducted with fairness, professionalism, and strict adherence to due process.

In an open letter addressed to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), PLRAI President Rudy G. Lacadin emphasized that the organization does not take sides in the controversy but firmly supports the government’s campaign against corruption.

“At the outset, let me make clear that PLRAI is not taking sides in this matter. We strongly condemn corruption in all its forms and fully support the lawful efforts of the government to investigate wrongdoing and hold those responsible accountable,” Lacadin stated.

However, the group expressed concern over what it described as the “blow-by-blow public airing” of allegations involving Fernandez even before the investigation has been completed and before any formal finding of liability has been issued.

While acknowledging the importance of transparency, Lacadin stressed that public discourse must also respect the fundamental principle of presumption of innocence until proven otherwise.

“Public exposure before the case is resolved may cause serious and lasting damage to the name, dignity, and reputation of the person concerned. If he is later cleared, the harm done to his reputation may no longer be fully undone,” he said.

The PLRAI appealed to the DILG leadership to ensure that the investigation is conducted with the highest level of professionalism, objectivity, and fairness, emphasizing that the process should remain thorough and impartial while avoiding unnecessary public spectacle.

“What we seek is not secrecy or special treatment. We simply ask for a process that is firm but fair, transparent but measured, and respectful of due process,” Lacadin added.

The association, composed of retired members of the Philippine National Police Academy, reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and the fight against corruption while underscoring the need to preserve professionalism within government institutions.

“As retired members of the uniformed service, we remain committed to the rule of law, the fight against corruption, and the preservation of professionalism in our institutions. Accountability and fairness must always go together,” Lacadin said.

He concluded the letter by expressing confidence in the leadership of the Interior Secretary to ensure that the issue will be handled in a manner that upholds justice, public trust, and institutional dignity. #
