ARREST AND JAIL THE CORRUPT, NOT ACTIVISTS! CONDEMN THE ARREST OF LABOR LEADER AND MUSICIAN MIKE CABANGON!
Cordillera Peoples Alliance vehemently condemns the arrest of Cordillera labor leader and musician, Mike Cabangon, today, December 27, in Baguio City. The arrest was based from a false and baseless case of terrorism financing, filed by state agents under the Terrorist Financing Prevention and Suppression Act of 2012.
The arrest came at a time when the people are demanding the prosecution of corrupt public officials. Worse, it was carried out during the holiday season, a time meant to be spent with families. If anything, those guilty of corruption should be the ones arrested and jailed, not the activists!
Mike Cabangon is an activist, not a criminal and never a terrorist. He is Kilusang Mayo Uno – Cordillera’s Spokesperson, a long time human rights activist, anti-corruption advocate, and a folk musician. He has been a staunch people’s rights activist and a labor leader most of his life. He is also a strong leader of the transport sector in their fight against Jeepney Phaseout and other threats to their livelihood. Even now in his senior years, he continues to dedicate his time, energy and talent for the people and communities he serves.
We enjoin the public and people’s rights advocates to condemn the arrest of Cabangon and call for the immediate dropping of the false charges against Cabangon.
