Francis Jariencio’s boxing achievement at Batang Pinoy 2024

Young boxer Francis Jarencio, a senior high student of the University of Baguio, boxed his way to a silver medal in the U17 Boys 44-46 kg category at the Batang Pinoy 2024 competitions, held in Puerto Prinsesa, Palawan.

Francis began his boxing career in the 8th grade, when he was known for being hard-headed. However, he gradually channeled his motivation for self-improvement into boxing.Just like many athletes, he faced challenges, especially when executing the skills from practice to actual matches. Fortunately, Francis feels he has greatly improved a year after competing at Batang Pinoy.

“Sa tingin ko mas nag improve ako ngayon dahil gusto ko ulit makakuha ng medal sa dadating a national game,” Francis said.

To prepare for Batang Pinoy, he focused on being disciplined, both personally and in training. He listened closely to his coach’s advice while maintaining his fighting spirit as the event approached.

Francis balances sports and studies by focusing on doing one thing at a time to avoid distractions.

During the Batang Pinoy competitions, he struggled to defend himself against an opponent from Leyte in the 44-46 Junior Boys category. The opponent’s strong left hand put Francis at a disadvantage but he persevered and won the round.

After winning the silver medal, Francis was overjoyed and felt his hard work and focus had paid off.

“Nagbunga lahat ng pagtitiis ko, worth it,” Francis stressed.

For Francis, boxing is very important because of the lessons it has taught him, especially discipline and the wonderful memories.

While boxing may seem violent, he encourages young people to try the sport, offering his own experience as an example.

“Huwag natin pansinin ang nasa paligid dahil ‘di nila alam kung paano ka nag-iimprove [dahil sa boxing],” he said. – Jaeda Pad-eng, PIO-SLU Intern / Gaby Keith
