Climate Outlook: 11-19 tropical cyclones may enter from June to November

“Prepare for long rainy days and a parade of typhoons.”

This was the message of Engr. Hilario Esperenza, Asst. Weather Services Chief, Baguio Synoptic Station under the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA).

His message was heard by members of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) and barangay officials during the pre-disaster risk assessment (PDRA) meeting held June 3, 2025 in cognizance of the weather bureau’s declaration of southwest monsoon or ‘habagat’ season.

Esperanza said the majority of the tropical cyclones that may develop and enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility from June to November 2025 may affect Luzon and Visayas.

“Based on the tropical cyclone climatology with actual tracks from 1948 to 2024, the month of July to September has the greatest number of typhoons with an average of 3 to 4 TCs in a month,” Esperanza said.

He furthered the Cordillera Administrative Region particularly Benguet Province may experience 12 days of dry days in June; eight days of dry days in July and 11 days of dry days in August meaning there will be more rainy days in the next three months.

Dry day is defined as a day with less than 1 mm of rainfall observed. With the information from DOST-PAGASA, Engr. Charles Bryan Carame, Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer IV of the CDRRMO encouraged barangay officials to be prepared using the PDRA Scenario Building Process as taught to the DRRM councils.

Among the proactive measures identified are continuous cleaning of trap gates at the city camp lagoons; proactive pruning of trees and branches in coordination with the City Environment and parks management Office (CEPMO), among others. – JM Samidan
